Crystal Palace is parting ways with veteran defender Joel Ward after a remarkable 13-year spell at the club.
The 35-year-old made over 360 appearances for the Eagles since his move from Portsmouth in 2012.
Ward played a crucial role in helping Palace achieve promotion to the Premier League in his debut season at Selhurst Park and has remained a consistent member of the squad throughout their time in the top flight.
He was appointed club captain for the 2023/24 season and holds the record for the most Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace.
Signed for a modest fee of just £400,000, Ward has undoubtedly provided exceptional value to the club over his 13 seasons of dedicated service.
Palace chairman Steve Parish paid tribute to Ward, describing him as “an incredible ambassador” from his first day, highlighting his professionalism, competitive spirit, and high standards. Parish praised Joel as an example for all players through his values, presence, and pride in representing the club. He conveyed best wishes for Ward`s future endeavors and expressed gratitude for the shared memories and friendship.
“From the very day he joined Crystal Palace, Joel has been an incredible ambassador for this Football Club. Open, friendly and professional, but also competitive, driven and uncompromising in the standards he sets. Simply put, over the course of 13 years’ service, Joel has been an example for all Palace players who have gone before him – in his values, in his presence, and in his dedication to representing this club with pride. This is a great time to celebrate Joel`s achievements and reflect on many great memories here with a truly treasured player and friend. Good luck, Joel, with your next adventure – and thank you.”
Ward signed a one-year contract extension with Palace last year.
However, he has faced challenges with injuries, particularly a calf issue, limiting his appearances this season, and he has not yet publicly confirmed his future playing plans.
Reflecting on his long tenure, Ward shared his feelings with the club`s official website.
“For me, it’s been a huge privilege to wear this shirt, to represent this club. It’s been an incredible journey with so many fond memories, so many incredible moments – moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life. Obviously, I came from somewhere else. But I’ve been a part of this club and a part of the furniture for so long that I’d like to think I’m part of the family. This isn’t ‘goodbye’ – it’s merely see you later.”
