New Jersey Devils May Explore Trading Nico Hischier Amidst Contract Uncertainty

As Nico Hischier enters the final year of his contract, speculation is mounting regarding his future with the New Jersey Devils. With the team undergoing a transition in management, his contract situation presents a critical decision point this offseason. Chris Johnston of “The Chris Johnston Show” discussed the possibility of a significant trade involving the forward, especially if extension talks with the new leadership don’t progress favorably.

Julien McKenzie suggested that the Devils might be motivated to make a major move to “shake things up,” particularly after missing out on acquiring a player like Quinn Hughes. Johnston highlighted Hischier’s status as being one year away from free agency, implying that he could become a centerpiece in a trade if an extension isn’t reached.

“I think it’s what he wants,” Johnston commented on Hischier’s leverage. “You know, all the leverage has shifted to the player in this circumstance. And so, you know, I think one of the, probably the first order of business from a roster standpoint, is, you know, for the new leader in New Jersey to get a sense where that stands. Is Hischier open to an extension? What’s it going to cost? Either get that done or you’re trading him. I don’t imagine they would go into a lame duck year with him.”

The discussion also touched upon the league-wide trend of top players seeking extensions well before they become unrestricted free agents. Johnston pointed out that for players eligible for UFA status in 2027, the summer of 2026 will be crucial for either signing an extension or potentially being traded. He believes the decision regarding Hischier will need to be made much sooner than many might anticipate.

“He’s either signing in New Jersey this summer. Doesn’t have to be on July 1st. Could be July 5 or August 12th, or whatever day he wants. But I think it has to be moving towards a signing or, you know, he’s likely being dealt,” Johnston stated.

Given that it’s a relatively weak free-agent class and center is a premium position, Hischier would possess immense value as a trade piece. Several notable teams are reportedly in need of a front-line center, making him a highly coveted asset if the Devils decide to move him.
