Chelsea`s top scout was present at a recent game in Colombia to watch an exciting young South American player.
The scout from The Blues was in Bogota to keep an eye on teenage forward Neyser Villarreal. Villarreal caused a stir in a derby game against Santa Fe when he stood on the ball during play.
The 19-year-old winger was immediately shown a yellow card by the referee for showboating, which increased tensions between the rival teams both on the field and among the fans.
Villarreal stood out for Colombia at this year’s South American Under-20 Championship. He was the tournament`s top scorer, netting eight goals and providing four assists.
However, the Millonarios young talent is no stranger to controversy early in his professional career. He previously missed club training due to numerous offers from overseas clubs last month.
Porto, Inter Miami, and Watford are all showing interest in signing the talented attacker. He is capable of playing anywhere in the forward line and his contract is due to expire later this year.
Chelsea have increased their interest in Villarreal, with their leading scout for the region travelling from Sao Paulo to Bogota to watch him play.
Stamford Bridge already has many South American players, and Chelsea have signed and loaned out many more to other clubs for experience.
This includes Villarreal’s Colombian U20 teammate Oscar Perea, who Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo, signed last summer.
Villarreal seems to have even greater potential. His impressive dynamic dribbling and shooting skills were evident at the South American Under-20 Championship.
His ability to navigate tight spaces often drew multiple defenders to him. However, he could easily outplay opponents in one-on-one situations using body movements and quick changes in direction.
Scouts have noted that his rapid acceleration makes him appear to have an extra level of speed. His shots are powerful and accurate, although he might need to refine his final pass.
