Chael Sonnen Explores Michael Chandler’s Retirement Prospects in 2026

MMA News

UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen has offered his perspective on what might prompt Michael “Iron” Chandler to consider retirement by 2026.

Chandler is scheduled to face Mauricio Ruffy on June 14. This bout follows Chandler’s initial desire to complete his TUF 31 rivalry with Conor McGregor upon the Irishman’s return to the octagon. However, UFC President Dana White reportedly had alternative plans for “Iron,” indicating a lack of interest in a potential McGregor vs. Chandler clash in 2026.

Currently grappling with a three-fight losing streak, and having lost five of his last six UFC appearances, the 39-year-old Chandler is now poised to challenge the formidable and surging knockout artist Ruffy. Betting oddsmakers reportedly view Chandler as an underdog against the 29-year-old Brazilian.

Sonnen Pinpoints Key Factors for Chandler’s Potential Retirement

Chael Sonnen believes that a failure to secure a victory against Ruffy would likely lead Michael Chandler to hang up his gloves. In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Sonnen explained that despite “Iron’s” continued desire to become a UFC champion, facing a fourth consecutive defeat at 39 years old would render this aspiration a “pipe dream.” Consequently, a loss to Mauricio Ruffy on June 14 could be the deciding factor for his retirement.

“Chandler will retire if Ruffy beats him. He likely will, and I do not know if it will necessarily be his choice. Chandler is now 38 years old. Chandler is also gainfully employed by Paramount and is going to be part of the announcing team. And should he lose a fight, that would probably just be a point in Chandler’s career. Chandler’s one of those guys who still wants to be a world champion. So if he gets confronted with that’s just not in your future… He likely would say, ‘Fair enough. Give my spot to somebody else.’”

Sonnen further highlighted Chandler’s age and his existing employment with Paramount as part of an announcing team, suggesting that another loss could naturally transition him into a post-fighting career. If confronted with the reality that a world championship is no longer a feasible goal, Sonnen predicts Chandler would graciously step aside.
