Carlo Ancelotti: Italy Job Felt Like Part-Time Role

Football News

Carlo Ancelotti disclosed that he declined a significant managerial position because it felt like it would be a “part-time job”.

The 65-year-old Italian coach is focused on leading Real Madrid in a challenging situation against Arsenal, aiming to overcome a 3-0 deficit.

Ancelotti mentioned that he declined the Italian national team job in 2018, before Roberto Mancini was appointed.

He explained that he rejected the role because he was concerned it might diminish his passion for coaching, stating to RSI, a Swiss broadcaster, that it felt like a “part-time job”.

He elaborated, saying he declined because he didn`t feel it was right for him at the time.

“I prefer being on the field every day, preparing training sessions. The national team role appeared to be less engaging daily, which could have reduced my passion for the work.”

“That’s the only reason.”

Ancelotti’s contract with Real Madrid is set to continue until 2026.

Currently, Real Madrid faces an uphill battle to retain their Champions League title and are behind Barcelona by four points in La Liga.

They are also scheduled to compete against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final later in the month. Failing to win at least one domestic title could result in a trophyless season for the club, potentially jeopardizing Ancelotti’s position despite his successful tenure.

Fabrizio Romano, a journalist, reported that Real Madrid is considering Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen as a potential replacement if Ancelotti departs.

Ancelotti stated that he plans to discuss his future with Real Madrid at the end of the season, noting his contract is clear and discussions will occur then. He acknowledged the club`s consistent support, especially during challenging periods.

Since his return to Real Madrid, Ancelotti has achieved significant success, winning 11 titles, including two Champions League titles, two league titles, a Copa del Rey, and the Club World Cup.

Ancelotti, who previously managed AC Milan and Chelsea, joined Real Madrid from Everton and revealed that he initiated the contact for his return to the Spanish club.

He mentioned, “Actually, I was the one who called them.”

“The year before, I contacted them to inquire about player availability, which led to the signing of James Rodriguez.”

“I was aware they would be seeking a coach the following year.”

“I spoke with the director and suggested they needed to find a good one.”

Ancelotti also shared that he once dreamed of managing Liverpool but, after managing Everton and experiencing the Merseyside derby, he now considers himself “absolutely” an Everton fan.

He said, “My dream was to coach Liverpool, but then I joined Everton and experienced the intense rivalry. Now, I am definitely an Everton fan.”

“I appreciated the atmosphere at Everton, the spectacular passion for the club.”

“You can also feel the Everton fans` long-standing suffering, especially compared to Liverpool`s consistent success in the Premier League.”
