Bruins Give General Manager Don Sweeney 2-Year Extension

NHL News

The Boston Bruins are facing an offseason marked by potential changes, yet stability has been confirmed in the front office. The team has announced that General Manager Don Sweeney has been granted a two-year contract extension.

Bruins President Cam Neely released a statement praising Sweeney, saying, “Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision toward the future of the Boston Bruins. He made difficult decisions around the trade deadline with the confidence they will pay dividends as we craft a path back to contention.”

Among the significant moves made were the trades involving key players Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, and Brandon Carlo. Earlier in the season, coach Jim Montgomery was also dismissed. Joe Sacco served as interim coach, finishing with a 25-30-7 record, and is reportedly a candidate for the permanent head coaching position.

Sweeney`s immediate responsibilities include hiring a new head coach and reshaping a roster that concluded the previous season at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. The team`s struggles were attributed to inconsistent forward performance, below-average goaltending from Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo, and various injuries.

Despite the challenges, team CEO Charlie Jacobs set an ambitious goal for the upcoming season last month.

Jacobs stated, “We`ve spoken at great length about this: The team that we currently have, [if] healthy and with the additions we intend to make this summer, I anticipate that we`ll have a playoff team and play meaningful hockey at this time of year in 2026.”

Neely reinforced this vision on Tuesday, emphasizing that winning championships remains the ultimate objective.

In response, Sweeney expressed his gratitude in a statement: “I am very appreciative to Charlie, the entire Jacobs family, and to Cam for their continued trust and support. It`s an honor to be part of a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fanbase. I fully understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with this role. Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I. The collective goal is to build a team that makes Bruins fans proud and ultimately brings another Stanley Cup back to Boston.”

Sweeney has held the General Manager role for the Bruins for the past decade, during which the team reached the playoffs eight times. However, their most recent Stanley Cup victory occurred in the 2010-11 season.
