Bruce Cassidy has been dismissed from his head coaching position in the NHL for the second time in his career. His initial departure was from the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2022. Subsequently, he was hired by the Vegas Golden Knights, who themselves had just parted ways with their coach, Peter DeBoer, that same offseason.
Cassidy arrived in Vegas following a near-Stanley Cup victory with the Bruins in 2019, bringing a competitive drive. The Golden Knights possessed a skilled roster, needing a coach to maximize their potential. Cassidy delivered immediately, guiding them to a Stanley Cup win in his inaugural season. However, despite a solid winning percentage (60%), the team’s performance has noticeably declined since that triumph.
Regardless of whether the cause was roster issues, goaltending struggles, or other factors, the Golden Knights failed to meet expectations, leading GM Kelly McCrimmon to conclude that a change was necessary. This decision prompts speculation: did Cassidy lose the locker room, or were deeper issues at play?
Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman, speaking on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, NHL Network, and Sportsnet, observed that Bruce Cassidy is known for his demanding coaching style, which can be challenging for players. Tensions within the team reportedly existed from the beginning of his tenure.
Friedman characterized Cassidy as an excellent yet highly demanding coach. He suggested that Cassidy’s pattern, now evident across two head coaching roles, points to a common cycle where his intense approach begins to wear on players after about three or four seasons.
Furthermore, Friedman recounted a highly tense meeting between Cassidy and several players before Game 5 of last year’s playoff series against Edmonton, which he believes damaged their relationship. While some players appreciated Cassidy’s directness, others voiced concerns to management. Management initially supported Cassidy, but it became clear this season, and to the Vegas front office, that his message was no longer resonating. The bond between the coach and players had weakened, suggesting it was simply time for a change.
As often happens in player-coach dynamics, relationships can deteriorate. Despite this, GM Kelly McCrimmon stated in a media briefing that Cassidy hadn’t ‘lost the room,’ but rather the team had lost its drive and enthusiasm. Players generally concurred, though captain Mark Stone specifically noted a lack of freshness in the locker room atmosphere.
Interestingly, John Tortorella, Cassidy’s potential replacement, is also renowned for his demanding style. This situation highlights that a change in coaching voice, even with a similar philosophy, can sometimes re-energize a team. Tortorella’s coaching method is often effective at instilling the competitive energy required for victory.
This marks the second instance where players have reportedly grown dissatisfied with Cassidy’s coaching approach. Nevertheless, given his proven track record, it is widely expected that Bruce Cassidy will quickly secure another coaching opportunity.
