Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Announces Pregnancy After Break From Tennis

Sports News

Slovakian professional tennis player Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who reached the semifinals at the Olympics, has shared the news that she is expecting her first child.

The former World No. 26 and three-time WTA Tour title winner has not participated in tournaments since her match against Varvara Gracheva during the qualifying rounds in Doha back in February.

Schmiedlova took to Instagram last week to explain her recent absence from the sport: “`Hello, I just wanted to let you know that the reason I haven`t been playing tournaments or been part of the BJKC team in April is because of my pregnancy,` the Slovakian player wrote. `It`s a personal matter for me, but I wanted to share this to avoid any confusion in the coming months. My partner and I are very happy and excited.`”

Schmiedlova`s partner is her compatriot, ATP professional Lukas Klein, who is currently ranked World No. 173.

The 30-year-old has secured three WTA titles during her career: Katowice and Bucharest in 2015, and Bogota in 2018. She also reached the fourth round of the French Open in 2023. However, her most significant achievements often came while representing Slovakia, particularly at the Olympic Games. It was on the Olympic stage that she recorded all three of her career wins against Top 10 ranked opponents, including notable victories over Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova which led to her semifinal appearance in Paris last summer. She has also been a dedicated member of the Slovakian Billie Jean King Cup team over the years, contributing to their run to the final in 2023.
