Nemanja Matic called him "one of the worst goalkeepers in United's history" amid a heated exchange.
Onana – who was benched for the Premier League defeat at Newcastle on Sunday – then committed two errors in the 2-2 draw in the first leg last week in France.
But when Manuel Ugarte gave the Red Devils a tenth-minute lead against Lyon at Old Trafford, the Cameroonian couldn`t resist a playful reaction.
The goalkeeper ran in front of the Lyon fans who had booed him the previous week and performed a jumping, dancing motion, nodding his head in delight as he looked towards the away section.
However, United fans watching at home were split on whether it was clever gamesmanship or too risky with 80 minutes remaining and plenty of time for his celebration to backfire.
One fan commented: "Onana really went for it with the Lyon fans after the goal."
Another wrote: "I don`t understand why he needs to put so much pressure on himself."
A third added: "Onana's s***housery level is top-tier, love to see it."
A fourth asked: "Is anyone else hoping this becomes a timeless image?"
A fifth stated: "Absolutely embarrassing."
A sixth replied: "The ultimate cringe moment."
A seventh commented: "This guy is genuinely insane."
An eighth responded: "Looking for trouble."
A ninth posted: "He just couldn`t hold back."
And a final user joked: "This is going to be hilarious when Matic scores."
Ugarte scored from close range to put United ahead in the match.
Diogo Dalot then made it 2-0 on the night – 4-2 on aggregate – with a precise shot into the bottom corner.
However, things quickly went wrong for Onana and United who were embarrassed when Lyon scored FOUR unanswered goals, including two in extra time.
But Onana had the last laugh as Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire all scored in the final minutes to secure an unforgettable European victory.
Onana sprinted directly to Ruben Amorim when Maguire scored with a header and embraced his manager in joyous scenes.
